What BLS certification do nursing students need?
Follow your nursing program's clinical-clearance instructions. When they specify American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider certification, a general CPR class or an online-module completion certificate is not a substitute. Complete the required skills assessment and submit the final course card by your program's deadline.

- Confirm the exact credential. Read the required course name and issuing organization. "CPR certified" is not specific enough: check whether your program requires AHA BLS Provider rather than Heartsaver or a community CPR course.
- Ask whether your school arranges training. Before paying elsewhere, check for a required provider or school-run course. NYU Meyers, for example, directs first-sequence students through NYSIM. Follow your own clinical office's instructions.
- Check the learning format. HeartCode BLS combines online learning with a hands-on session. Ask whether your program accepts that pathway and confirm that your booking includes every component you need.
- Match your card to your clinical dates. Check both the paperwork deadline and the period your card must cover. Plan renewal before any gap, allowing time for skills testing, card issuance, and your school's review.
- Prepare the right proof. Confirm how to submit your final BLS Provider eCard or other approved record. A booking receipt or HeartCode online completion certificate is not the final BLS Provider card.

Is Heartsaver the same as BLS for nursing school?
No. If your program specifies BLS Provider, do not replace it with Heartsaver CPR/AED or First Aid without your program's approval. Confirm the exact course name before registering.
Can I complete nursing-school BLS entirely online?
Not through the HeartCode online module alone. The AHA's blended BLS pathway requires online coursework plus hands-on skills. Your school also decides which training formats it accepts.
How long is an AHA BLS card valid?
AHA course cards are valid for two years, through the end of the expiration month. Compare your card's expiration with your clinical dates and your program's renewal requirements.
Do I also need ACLS before nursing clinicals?
Check your program's list rather than assuming it is required. ACLS training covers advanced cardiovascular life support and is separate from BLS. Do not assume it replaces a required BLS Provider card.
