ACLS Frequently Asked Questions

ACLS Provider (Initial) is for first-time ACLS students or those whose AHA ACLS card has been expired for a while. Training covers adult cardiac arrest and peri-arrest care, airway management, ECG/arrhythmia recognition, algorithms, and team-based megacode with a hands-on skills test. After passing, you’ll receive a same-day AHA eCard valid for 2 years. See ACLS course options.
Choose Renewal if you currently hold (or recently held) a valid AHA ACLS card and your employer permits renewal. Some employers also require a current BLS card alongside ACLS—check your policy. If your ACLS is long-expired or you’re new to ACLS, book the Initial course. When in doubt, confirm with your employer or ask us.
It’s the in-person skills check after completing the AHA HeartCode ACLS online module. Bring your HeartCode completion certificate to your scheduled skills session for same-day ACLS certification.
AHA ACLS Provider eCards are valid for 2 years from the issue date. Most hospitals and employers recognize AHA nationwide. When it’s time to renew, choose ACLS Renewal.
If you’re current (or recently expired) and your employer allows it, book ACLS Renewal. New to ACLS, long-expired, or switching from a non-AHA card? Book ACLS Provider (Initial).
A valid photo ID and comfortable clothing for hands-on practice. AHA requires access to the ACLS manual and completion of the Precourse Self-Assessment (details and link are in your confirmation email). If you need accommodations, let us know.

No. ACLS is advanced care for adult cardiac arrest and peri-arrest (airway, ECG, pharmacology, algorithms, team megacode). BLS covers high-quality CPR and AED skills for single- and two-rescuer response. Many employers require a current BLS card in addition to ACLS. See our BLS page and BLS vs. ACLS guide.
